Woodworking Workbench - Buying (some) Lumber

The first step in this daunting process - buying lumber (some of it). However, deciding what to buy first was easy. The plan called for (7) 2x4s but I decided to get a few more. I spent time at the store carefully choosing ones that were the least bowed and twisted, but I wanted to give myself some options once I got home and started matched them up.

My shopping list also had materials I needed for the aprons and the legs. With the store closing in 20 minutes, I rushed and chose the best items I could. In a moment of lost concentration, I fumbled a massive 2x12x12 that I was trying to get down from a shelf which hit me square in the jaw. Luckily the store was almost empty and no one saw that!

The selection of 4x4 at the store wasn’t great. I would have had to work around many cracks and twists in the lumber.

I almost had to call for back up, but everything managed to fit in the car.

Next morning, I had a little buyers remorse about the 4x4s I had purchased. They were cedar and had quite a few checks (cracks at the ends). Rather than settling, I called a local lumber yard and they carried 4x4s furniture grade pine. Not much more expensive than the cedar from the big box store. This was one of many items I returned/exchanged.

I also had a niggling feeling in the back of my mind - do I really need a Tool Well?

Oh and my jaw is just fine, no worse for wear.
