Just like last year, EA sports has a code that you have to retireve from somewhere that will unlock the new jerseys in the game. But this time around, they are keeping it a secret until the official jerseys are unveiled by the NHL teams themselves, which is October 4th 2008. So, it's just a waiting game to find out the code.
UPDATE IV: The code was finally released on Dec 9th.
UPDATE III: They are not holding out on the code to make you guys miserable. EA has signed a contract with RBK, and cannot breach that again (like they did last year). Patients guys/girls... It will be released this month, just not sure what date.
UPDATE II: I guess we'll be waiting a bit longer than expected. This was an announcement posted on the EA Sports Official Forum:
The third jersey code will not be listed this Monday. Due to our commitments with Reebok, we cannot release the code until a specified date as agreed upon and though I cannot mention the exact date, I can say that it will be in December. Thanks for your patience on this one folks.
UPDATE: After further investigation...haha.. It looks like EA will hold onto the code for a little while longer. They are waiting for ALL the NHL teams to announce their respective jerseys, which could take us into mid-November.
I had posted that code here for NHL 08, and I'll do the same for NHL 09 as soon as it's released.
In the mean time, I'm trying to enjoy the game itself, but there are a lot of things about it that don't sit well with me, and I'll write a review about that shortly.

SO I have been playing EA Sports NHL since 94, I run out and get the new game every year, the day it comes out, hell I bought my PS3 just for the hockey game, yes I'm a nerd. I however find a number of things wrong with the game every year, oh and I'm on my 3rd PS3 as well, just imagine no way to transfer your data once the system burns up, I was on my second year of NHL08 when the first PS3 died on me, and I play both the pro and the minor games all season at 3o mins a game, so yes again "nerd alert", that's like 164gamesx2seasonsx30mins, and that's not including the playoffs. So I went and picked up a memory stick for a back up, but get the right one cause I heard that not all memory sticks work with the PS3, and yes I think I heard that you can save your data via online or something to that affect, but back country has limitations with cable, so still rocking the dial-up. But back to the point, every year I find things wrong. Before I start a Dynasty, I go thru all the free agents and find out which ones don't belong, I transfer them for some of the Euro league guys that look bad ass, and I'm talking skill not their ugly ass mugs. I do however put them in the free agents so that all the teams have a chance to get them, this has a extra bonus, teams can't resign the 1st few year free agents cause the cap, so hold out till the year is over and scoop up some really awesome NHL players, hell sometimes there will be a guy as good as Eric Stall just hanging out for a few months into the season until someone else gets hurt and is off the cap, it's kinda wild and lots of scoring with all the top guys from all the leagues in one mega combo. With it's few shortcomings NHL 09 is solid enough and maybe the best to date. I would like to see young gun stars for the next few seasons worth of drafts on the game, as in the real up coming players, football has it, U can draft such players as Matt Forte in the 1st draft, but hockey has all these guys with the same four faces. Sometimes I do wonder if anyone test plays the game before finalizing it, cause I find things that I don't like, and would think others as well. AS FOR THE JERSEY OCDE~~~~~~~~~~~I think if anything it hurts Sleepbok, I went out to get a bag for all my gym and boxing stuff and was looking at some Reebok bags but bought UnderArmor instead just cause I had, had it with the damn waiting, though they might have some really great products, I was left bitter over the wait, so they don't get my hundo bucks some other company does.

I think the 4th was just an optimistic date that someone picked. The notice said that it would be released sometime in early Dec, and the 4th seemed like a good 'early December' date.
I have no clue when this is going to be released...but as soon as it is, I will post it here, so stay tuned.
I'm just as excited as you are, but I'm enjoying the game just as much without the third jerseys, and you guys should do the same...

Secondly, I also would like to commend EA Sports for the mere fact they put that little girl in as her dying wish. With that being said I would like to say to everyone who consistantly whines, asks and revolves their life around these unlockable jerseys. You're going to get sick of them within a few days of playing anyway. The time is relatively soon to my understanding, so be patient or put your hugees back on and play in the corner with your legos (the big ones, not the small one)! I'm sure there are certain copyright issues and regulations EA has to comply with in terms of the NHL and all it's teams, not to mention the simple fact that the teams in the league would probably be absolutely pissed beyond belief if THEIR jerseys were rendered on a video game and made viewable to the public before their fans got to see it. However, you can only edit a players rating if you are playing "exhibition games", which doesn't help me when playing in dynasty mode. second, i don't care that "MAKE-A-WISH" girl is in the game and it's cool that EA sports did something for this little girl, however, they didn't have to give her a rating of 98 or 99. it's one thing having your wish to be put into a game and i'm fine with that but when people buy a EA sports title, they expect it to be as authentic as possible, which is what EA has been known for. i owned nhl 2k9 before i traded it in for 09 because i felt it was second rate. with that said, i very much enjoy playing 09 and i'm looking forward to 2010.

Sure, it's frustraiting, but it is also marketing and politics. The Ottawa Senators are releasing their third jersey this Saturday, and I would have hated to have seen it in the game before I saw it live.

Totally agree with your comments.
I would love to see the outdoor game, but I think that would require a lot of re-work of the engine for EA.
Since they currently have a model of a rink and they just skin/texture it differently based on the location... for the outdoor game, they would have to do a lot of drastic work... which I frankly don't think they would be up for.... unless ofcourse the outdoor games became a regular part of the NHL (10+ games a year being played outdoor).

Someone even said they would never buy an EA game again because of the codes not being released. That's just being stupid, when it comes to sports (except NBA) EA definately creates the best games and as Purazar said, it builds suspense. So just be patient and wait for the jerseys to be released by the teams, who have the right to release it when they want. How would you feel if you had this awesome design and had big plans to unveil it, then someone sent out a code that showed it to everyone weeks before you unveiled it. You'd be pissed so just suck it up and quit being babies.

Great comment. People are just anxious. So am I. It'll be cool to play the game with different colours on. It will be a thrill for 2-3 days I'm sure.
People are used to having things right away.. can't pass a leve, look up cheat codes, so I'm sure it's killing people to unlock something that isn't under their control.
For that reason, I appreciate EA keeping these codes a secret, because I'm sure teams were pissed last year that the code leaked out really early.
I'll make sure to keep on top of it so that I can post the code as soon as it comes out.
Till then, just enough the game.

Because that would defeat the purpose of releasing the team jerseys on their inaugural night.
Some teams have special events planned before the game, when they choose to release the jeresys, so it would suck if everyone knew what the jerseys already looked like. there would be no suspence.

Well, its for a valid reason. They don't want you to see the jerseys before they are released by the teams themselves. I don't mind this strategy. Builds anticipation, and it's not stopping you from playing the game...
Just enjoy the game as is for now, and you can enjoy it all over again when the new jerseys are released...
